The Financial Counsellors’ Association of Western Australia (FCAWA) is the peak body and voice of financial counselling in WA. We advocate for financial wellbeing and promote excellence in the sector to achieve our goals of financially resilient communities and reduced hardship for all.

FCAWA welcomes this week’s long-awaited announcement from Premier Roger Cook, outlining the details of the $85,000 payment to be made to each living Stolen Generations Member who was removed from their family in WA prior to 1 July 1972.

“We’re pleased to be supporting the community on this initiative, having received additional State government funding to develop specific resources and training for our member financial counsellors to ensure they can assist those seeking advice,” says FCAWA CEO, Melanie Hopkinson. “In some cases, those receiving payments might be vulnerable, unsure how to best budget or at an increased risk of falling prey to scams, among other hurdles. Seeking advice from an independent, professional, free financial counsellor early will ensure those receiving payments are confident with how to manage the funds received,” she added.
